The dye house

VAT 47 dyes in batches of forty-seven. Every garment carries its lot number, and lots are never repeated.

A live indigo vat is never twice the same. Temperature, time in the dip and the age of the vat all move the shade. We stop each batch at forty-seven pieces, number it, and start again.

Where we work

We dye and sew in Osaka and Okayama, Japan; Portland, USA; and Hawick, Scotland. International orders route from whichever house holds the lot.

Repairs for life

Send any VAT 47 garment back for darning, patching or a re-dip in a current lot. First repair is free; after that it's cost of materials. We match thread to your original batch where we still hold it.

Caring for indigo

Wash cold, inside out, alone for the first three washes. Line dry in shade — direct sun pulls the shade unevenly. Expect crocking: indigo transfers onto pale fabric and car seats early on. Never bleach.
